Twenty-Two

Conrad listened but didn’t really hear what Juliet Howard was saying as she spoke to the crumpled tissue clutched within her hands, knuckles white, cheeks streaked with salt where the tears had fallen, his mind too focused on Penny and the description she had given him of the demon to process whatever new bit of “evidence” Juliet had imagined that proved her husband didn’t love her anymore.

“Dr. Collins?” Juliet asked.

He didn’t reply, not at first, but then after she asked if he was okay he said, “I’m fine, I’m just trying to wrap my mind around why you think this proves he doesn’t love you anymore.”

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“No, I’m sorry.”

“But his email clearly stated that we’re just staying together for the sake of the kids and once they’re in college—” She burst into tears again, the sobs sounding like the shrieks of a dying animal.

Shit.

Email?

To whom?

The one time she actually did have legit evidence of her fears and he hadn’t been paying attention.

“Have you spoken to him about this email?” he asked.

Juliet shook her head.

“Why not?”

“He’ll get upset that I read it.”

“Yes, but that will just be his attempt at deflecting.”

Juliet contemplated this, lips tight as she once again began to stare at the tissues she clutched.

He waited, his focus shifting toward Susan once again.

“Maybe I should talk to his mother,” Juliet said, words wet.

“You’ve tried that before.”

A nod.

“She’ll find a way of using your words to manipulate her son.”

Another nod and then, “But this time I have evidence that she is doing this.”

“How so?”

“The email.”

Conrad frowned. “What email?”

Her eyes went wide. “The one Bradly sent her.”

“Yes, but how is that evidence that she is being manipulative?”

“Because she was telling him not to wait and that if he isn’t happy now he needs to end it, and that he shouldn’t worry about losing half of everything in a divorce because of the new evidence she has of my affair.”

Had Conrad been sipping a beverage he would have spit it out. “What affair?”

“I’m not having one, but she clearly wants him to think that I am so that he then leaves me.” More tears. “I don’t know what to do.”

Conrad waited several seconds and then said, “You need to talk to him. Explain that you’re not having an affair. Nip that in the bud before it grows.”

Juliet shook her head. “I almost wish she hadn’t replied to me by mistake.”

“Replied to you?”

“Have you been listening to anything I’ve been saying today?” she demanded, her anger catching him off guard.

“Of course I have, but sometimes it’s hard to understand what you’re saying when your words are mangled by tears.”

“Oh, well then I’ll try not to be so emotional when baring my soul to you.”

“Juliet. Are we going to have to bring out the pillow again?” he asked.

She stared at him for several seconds, struggling to maintain a look of anger.

He waited.

The anger fell away and she shook her head. “No.”

“Okay. Now explain what you mean by she replied to you.”

“The email I read.
